Everyday Wirefree Comfort

Many women want to enjoy the great comfort and support offered from a wirefree bra. If you've never worn a wirefree bra before, and are wondering whether it's right for you, we urge you to give it a try. If you are used to wearing a wired bra, it may feel strange at first, but once you get used to the fit, comfort and support of wirefree, you'll never look back!

Just imagine - no wires to pinch or dig into your skin (or to get caught up in the washing machine!). A perfect fit, with great shape and support is possible with a wirefree bra, and we believe that every woman's lingerie drawer should have at least one Royce wirefree bra!

Why wirefree?

Our breasts change size and shape all of the time, even throughout the month, a wirefree bra will adapt and change with your body without the restrictions that wired bras can have. This means you'll feel more comfortable more of the time!

Some women just find wired bras uncomfortable and would prefer to wear wirefree but wirefree is particularly important if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have had surgery, need a sports bra or for a first bra.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, your breasts can change size and shape rapidly and can feel tender and sore. For this reason, it is recommended by most health professionals that you wear a well-fitting wirefree bra. A wirefree bra will fit and support you properly, and feel more comfortable than a wired bra (once you are used to the different "feel" of the wirefree - it can feel a bit strange at first if you've never worn one before!).

How will my size/breasts change and when?

You will start to notice changes in your breasts almost straightaway, and your changing body shape will mean your bra size can change a number of times during your pregnancy. The abdomen increases in size to accommodate the growing baby and the lower ribs lift upwards and outwards to provide more space in the abdomen. As a result the underband measurement will tend to increase during the pregnancy, until about one month before the baby is born. Hormonal changes may also mean your breasts become more sensitive.

Why is it best to wear wirefree during pregnancy?

A wirefree bra will give more comfort as your size increases, a wired bra will not expand so readily with your changing shape, and if it's badly fitted it could cause damage to the delicate breast tissues and lead to blocked milk ducts and infections, as well as being extremely uncomfortable.

When should I buy my first maternity bra in pregnancy?

It's best to get fitted for your new wirefree bra as soon as your regular bras start feeling too tight (this can be as early as 4-6 weeks into your pregnancy). After the first fitting, we recommend you visit your local stockist to be re-fitted/checked every six weeks - or whenever you feel you need to change sizes. Looking after your breasts now will help to avoid any sagging later on. We recommend that you fit your first maternity bra on the tightest eye to allow for the growth of your breasts and your bump!

Why is support so important in pregnancy?

Because of the rapid changes happening to your body, it's really important to get a great fitting, supportive bra for this time of your life. Ill-fitting bras and bras with wires can damage the delicate breast tissue. The breasts contain no muscles so good support now will help to maintain good shape after birth.

There is no need to buy a specific "maternity" bra - any of our bras from the Comfort range will fit and support you during your pregnancy.

Breastfeeding

Wirefree, specialist nursing bras are highly recommended for breastfeeding your baby. As well as being easy and convenient to use (drop cup clips allow quick and easy access for feeding), wirefree bras will ensure great comfort and support for your ever-changing shape.

Why should I wear wirefree for breastfeeding?

When looking for a nursing bra, choose one with soft, breathable fabrics, plenty of eye adjustments for flexible fit and easy drop cup clips, which you can operate one-handed (leaving the other arm free to hold your baby). Wearing poorly fitting wired bras for breastfeeding can cause issues such as damage to breast tissues, blocked milk ducts, and even mastitis as well as being extremely uncomfortable.

When should I buy my first Nursing Bra?

It may be best to leave buying your nursing bra until 2-4 weeks before the birth to ensure an accurate fit. Don't forget to leave enough room for breastpads, and to allow for a small increase in breast size when your milk "comes in". Lengthening the strap slightly will also give a little more room in the cup for those very full moments before a feed. Of course you can always wear your nursing bra as a support bra during the last few weeks of your pregnancy, bearing in mind that your ribcage will shrink after birth. And it"s best to buy at least three nursing bras: one to wear, one to wash, and a spare - just in case!

We've got a great range of wirefree Nursing bras to choose from, whether you're looking for a bra designed for the fuller bust, such as our classic Jasmine style or a fashionable bra such as Amy, available as a matching bra and short set, there is something to suit everybody. After Breast Surgery

Wirefree bras offer great comfort and support after surgery, when you may be feeling a little sore, tender or swollen. The Royce Caress range has been designed to give you extra support and comfort just when you need it, without wires, which could "dig in" and cause damage and unnecessary pain to scar areas.

What sort of bra will I need post mastectomy?

After breast surgery, a wirefree bra will be more comfortable than an underwired bra, which may irritate or dig into the delicate scar tissue.

For the early weeks after surgery we would recommend the Silver Post Surgery bra. With double-layered cups for added support, front fastening and seamfree cups this is the perfect bra to take into hospital. Later, when you have started to heal you could choose a bra from our Comfort or Caress range. If you wish to wear a prosthesis our Caress range of pocketed bras will be perfect for you.

When purchasing any type of bra we always recommend being professionally fitted, many of our stockists specialise in fitting mastectomy and post-surgery bras.

Can I go back to my underwired bras?

In theory yes, but it depends on the type of surgery you have had. It may not be appropriate in the first few months, while your body is still healing. It is really important to take care of your body in these early days after surgery, while your scars heal.

Remember that your body will have scarring on the inside, as well as the outside, so don't rush. Make sure you have healed properly and that you get fitted correctly before going back to your wired bras.

As a guide we would recommend you wear a wirefree bra for at least the first 6-12 months after surgery depending on how your body heals. You will find a wirefree bra very comfortable and as long as you get fitted correctly it will offer you great support. You might not even want to go back to your wired bras, once you've discovered the great comfort, support and fit a wirefree bra from Royce has to offer!

Starters & Teens

A good fitting, comfortable and supportive bra is very important at all times in life. When you are growing and developing, it's more important than ever.

Although lots of high-street stores sell underwired bras in sizes aimed at younger girls, it's best to choose wirefree bras, such as the Missy range, by Royce Lingerie. A wirefree bra will adapt and change with the body as it grows and develops, without any wires digging in or restricting the growth of the breast tissue.

Whether she needs a bra already, or just wants one because all of her friends have one, the Missy range is perfect for her!

When should I buy my daughter her first bra?

It really depends on how quickly she develops (physically and emotionally!) Wearing a bra is all part of growing up, so if her friends all start to wear one she might want to as well. If she's developing early then she might need to get one sooner than her friends. As a bit of a guide, many girls look to get their first bra at the age of around 12 but they can be as young as 9.

A first bra may be less about support and more about modesty and creating a nice shape under her clothes but most important of all, it needs to be comfortable and fit properly. Look for a bra that fits comfortably on the tightest hook, this way, they'll still be room for growth!

My daughter is not keen on being fitted, how can I reassure her?

Explaining what to expect will help to reassure her that it's nothing to worry about. Let her know that she won't have to completely undress in front of anyone and that she can keep a t-shirt or crop top on if she feels more comfortable when being measured. It's so important to make her feel at ease and for her first fitting experience to be a good one, this will then put her in good stead later in life to make sure she's always wearing the right size bra.

Sports

Wearing a good fitting and supportive bra is very important when taking part in active sports. Our breasts don't contain any muscles, which means that if they are not well supported (especially while exercising) ligaments can be stretched, leading to damage and long term sagging - which cannot be rectified.

A well-fitting, supportive sports bra such as the Impact Free can make all the difference, helping to keep the breasts in place during exercise.

Why should I choose wirefree for sports?

Choosing a wirefree bra for sports will mean that there's less chance of any wires rubbing or digging into breast tissues. You may feel that if you have larger breasts an underwired bra will support you better but the Impact Free Sports Bra was designed specifically with the larger busted lady in mind and you may just be surprised at how effective it is - try it for yourself and see!

Why do I need to wear a specific bra for sports?

There are no muscles in our breasts so if they are not supported properly the ligaments can stretch, this ligament damage cannot be corrected so it's very important to always keep your breasts well supported to prevent any damage.
