General advice

To find your bra size start by taking measurements A and B when wearing a bra.

When taking measurement A the tape measure needs to be held quite firmly.

Refer to the chart below to find your bra size.

Changes during pregnancy

During pregnancy the abdomen increases in size to accommodate the growing baby. The lower ribs lift upwards and outwards to provide more space in the abdomen. As a result the underband measurement will tend to increase during the pregnancy, until about one month before the baby is born.

It is essential to wear a good fitting, supportive bra during this time. The tissues of the breast are very delicate and the breast is growing and changing in preparation for feeding the new infant. Changes in the breasts normally begin well before the abdomen shows any sign of increasing in size.

Fitting your Support Bra

It is always preferable to be fitted by a trained bra fitter. However, when fitting a bra early in pregnancy it is important to remember:

  • to fit on the tightest eye position to allow the bra to "grow" with you.
  • avoid underwires as these may become uncomfortable and press into the delicate breast tissues.
  • ensure that the breast is well supported within the cup.

Fitting your Nursing Bra

The usual time to buy your nursing bras is towards the end of pregnancy, about 3 to 4 weeks before your baby is due. If possible it is better to be fitted by a trained fitter, but remember:

  • Fit the bra on the loosest eye to allow for the bra to be tightened after baby's born
  • Allow some extra room in the cup, for when the milk 'comes in'
  • make sure you are comfortable with the opening mechanism and that it can be managed with one hand.
