Pregnancy is a miracle, but it can also be a tough time for women. Our hormones go haywire, our bodies change drastically, and our emotions run high as we prepare for the life-changing events ahead.

If you’re pregnant or nursing now is a good time to think about the changes your breasts might go through, and how to go about accommodating your changing shape.

Not only do breasts get bigger, heavier and more swollen during pregnancy, but you may also notice that they feel more tender, look more veiny and even develop the odd stretch mark. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end there! All the oestrogen running through your body might cause your nipples to grow bigger and get darker, and they could even start to leak. The good news is that it’s all completely normal! It might not be glamorous, but it does mean that you need to give your breasts need more support and TLC than ever.

As these changes begin to take place, it’s time to invest in a suitable nursing bra. A nursing bra will ideally be wirefree. While some people believe this is important so as not to hinder milk production, pretty much everyone agrees that it’s a total must for your comfort.

Your nursing bra should also be supportive to help relieve the weight of your newly enhanced bust and protect your back. You’ll need a thick underband, wide shoulder straps and an adjustable fastening to accommodate your continually changing shape.

The Blossom bra is a great option as it can be adjusted to accommodate three sizes, supporting you as your breast size fluctuates throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Extenders also are also great to have as they ensure your bra stays comfy, saving you from buying multiple bras in different sizes.

Royce has many nursing bras to choose from, in all shapes and styles. So whatever stage of your pregnancy or breastfeeding journey you’re at, you can rest assured that the perfect bra is out there for you.

It’s best to keep an eye on how your bras fit you throughout your pregnancy journey – and as soon as things change, you’ll need to get fitted. If you’re not sure if you need a new bra yet, pop into any Royce stockist for a fitting at any time and our expertly trained fitters will advise you. You may even find that you have to wear several different sizes at different stages of your pregnancy. When it comes to nursing bras, we recommend leaving it as late into your pregnancy as possible to get fitted, because your breasts will keep on changing until you cross the finish line (and possibly for some time after, too).

While many of the changes will reverse once your baby is here, others might be here to stay. Your days of super perky, fabulously firm and stretch mark-free breasts might be over, but just remember that your body has grown and nurtured another human, and that’s more important than what your breasts look like. Be kind to yourself – your body has done something truly amazing and it deserves to be celebrated!
