Be afraid, be very afraid…When lingerie becomes a nightmare!

Our marketing executive Claire had an uncomfortable experience at the gym. “My horror story is the time I wore lacy knickers to a spinning class. It was the most uncomfortable thing EVER. I couldn’t even adjust them as I was at the front of the class and in tight leggings whilst peddling – I wouldn’t have been discreet. I just powered through…in great pain! Never wear lacy underwear to a spinning class!”
Claire recommends something a little softer like our smooth Maisie briefs. Claire knows now. Learn from Claire.
Do you find your bra straps moving of their own accord? Silently sliding down your shoulder, peeping out from under a short-sleeve or digging into your arm just as you reach up to that top shelf?
Time to get a grip! Your bra straps should sit comfortably on your shoulder so they don’t slip, but also not so tightly that they leave a mark. Check they’re the right fit by sliding two fingers, comfortably, underneath each strap and adjust accordingly. Do this regularly as washing can loosen the elastic over time.
Our warehouse manager Steph has a cautionary tale, “When I was younger my mum had got the washing in off the line. The next day she went to put her knickers on and felt a buzzing. There was a real live bee in her knickers!”
Steph’s lesson: “Remember – always shake your underwear when you get it in off the line!”
Does your washing machine have the spooky ability to turn your pristine whites to a putrid pink? An errant red sock has ruined many a pretty white brief or bra. If this is one of your pet hates make sure you follow these two simple rules when machine washing: 1. Spin the drum to check for small dark items stuck inside; 2. Shake the washing and load each item individually to make sure nothing colourful is lurking within.
While we’re on the subject, make sure your wash isn’t an environmental horror story. All of our Royce bras can be safely washed on a cooler, energy-saving 30 degree, delicate cycle. It’s also a good idea to fasten all bra hooks and place your lingerie in one of our new wash bags – this helps protect your underwear and other clothes, ultimately lengthening their lifespan.
Our junior designer Demi shares something that used to make her shudder. “I used to find it horrifying that when I was younger a lot of the girls at school used to wear two bras at once to make their boobs look bigger – LOL! I always used to wonder if they were in pain!”
Teen girls and grown women – embrace your size! Smaller boobs are nothing to be ashamed of – and wearing two bras really won’t make you look more endowed just a bit, well, odd. Similarly, larger chested women should embrace what nature has given them. But if your bigger boobs are hurting your back or moving around too much, you need to get re-fitted. If visiting a professional fitter isn’t an option right now, we have a brilliant online guide to finding the perfect fit at home. A well-fitted bra will provide all the support you need to keep breasts, big and small, behaving themselves.
Royce’s Commercial Director, Francesca Fleming, recalls her own lingerie horror story. “I used to go to a morning spin class before work but once I forgot to pack a normal bra to change into afterwards. There’s no way I could go to work without a bra on, so I had to shower and put my disgusting sweaty, wet sports bra back on under my work clothes. Gross!”
Avoid Francesca’s clammy nightmare by keeping a spare everyday bra in your gym bag. Our gorgeous new Posie bra comes in a twin pack so you can reserve the pink or grey for your after-workout outfit.
Our PR consultant Kerry tells an all too familiar tale. “I was in a hurry one morning so grabbed the pair of jeans I’d draped over my bedroom chair the night before, and pulled them on. Then, a good few hours later, I was standing in a shop when a pair of knickers silently escaped my jeans and fell to the floor…in front of a queue of customers. I just had to pick it up and pretend it was a handkerchief…”
Kerry says, “Always check your clothing for hidden underwear. Or simply make sure you put clothes away before bed!”
Royce’s technical designer Amymay remembers an embarrassing moment, “As a busy working mother, stealthily getting up and dressed before the kids rise has become an art form, yet one I am still to master. One dark winter morning, I rummaged around in my underwear draw and pulled out a trusty bra. I threw it on under a close fitting T-shirt and went about my day. It wasn’t until I was with my best friend when her little girl loudly said, “Auntie, what’s wrong with your boobies?”. I rushed to the toilets, looked in the mirror and could see why she had asked. I had grabbed an old bra that had previously tried to maim me when one of the wires popped out unexpectedly. I’d meant to fix it or recycle it, but no, that day I decided to wear it. So, there I was with lopsided boobs and, as a busty girl, it was super obvious to everyone else besides me. I wondered why the checkout assistant was giving me funny looks as I packed my shopping bags earlier that day!”
We say, time to ditch the wires completely! Royce Lingerie is the UK’s only dedicated wirefree bra specialist so we know why non-wired bras are the best.
