Set yourself a fun fitness challenge.
Fitness challenges work like mini projects – it could be learning how to do press-ups, perfecting a particular yoga move, or building the stamina to hold a squat for 100 seconds.
It can be as tough as you like – just remember to choose something that you’re really keen to achieve, regardless of how much fitter you’ll be. Always wanted to nail a handstand, run a 5K or do the splits?
There are countless ideas out there with credible PTs, yoga and Pilates experts sharing sound advice on how to build your form and technique over a set period of time. Search online or via social media (TikTok is fast becoming the home of fitness challenges) for the challenge of your choice.
Involve a friend.
There’s no denying that taking a friend with you on your fitness journey will result in increased motivation, greater accountability and more fun.
Discuss each other’s goals (these may differ so create a plan that suits you both), and what types of exercise you want to do, then set a timetable for action with a commitment to meet-up and exercise together at least once a week.
Getting the endorphins flowing while chatting over an exercise bike is a great way to combine a fitness task with your social life. And when a friend is relying on you to get out and get active, there’s less room for your own excuses not to!
Play exercise games.
The growing trend for gamifying fitness isn’t simply about ‘jumping around in the metaverse via a VR headset’. You can play exercise games with yourself at home, or with a friend in the gym. Try something like…
Focus on the feel-good factor.
Exercise releases endorphins, the feel good hormones which contribute to that euphoric high you tend to get after a great run, swim or workout. Endorphins also help reduce our perception of pain so those aching muscles are overshadowed for a little bit longer.
But aside from the immediate good vibes, keep reminding yourself why you’re doing this – regular exercise is going to help improve your balance, flexibility and stamina; increase your bone density, muscle mass and lung capacity; plus aide sleep and fight off depression. In essence, it will help you live a longer, healthier and happier life – and if that’s not a motivator, we don’t know what is!
