For Nevo Burrell an accidental bump of her arm revealed a mysterious lump, and signalled the start of an eight year battle with breast cancer.
Attempting to maintain a brave face, Nevo kept quiet about her diagnosis so as not to worry her loved ones. When the time finally came, she explained to her husband the night before her biopsy what was due.
After Nevo’s diagnosis, she underwent a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and tamoxifen for five years. Whilst Nevo managed to avoid any physical side-effects from the lumpectomy and radiotherapy, the process was exhausting, and the PTSD that followed was excruciating. What made matters worse were the eventual physical repercussions from the tamoxifen which led to aching bones, hot flushes and hair loss.
But despite the trauma she faced physically and mentally, Nevo still retains a positive outlook. She says: “I have met some great people, fellow cancer survivors, and new opportunities have opened up for me. My mindset is different, in the sense that I have weaned myself off overthinking!
“I am now helping women (and possibly men in the future), who are living with cancer, to regain confidence and heal quicker from the emotional impact of this life-threatening or life-changing illness.”
And to those recently diagnosed or concerned about their breasts, Nevo adds: “Take a trusted person with you to your initial appointment(s) and ask questions about your physical and mental health.
“Join a group to share your experiences, talk with your family and friends whilst managing their expectations and avoid “diva” friends to protect your wellbeing.
“Remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.”
