All around the world, men, women and even children love fashion – so much, in fact, that the fashion industry is worth a whopping £1 trillion. It’s great that fashion provides millions of jobs worldwide, but its popularity and success come at a huge cost to the environment.
Here are a few facts that might shock you:
350,000 tonnes of textiles – or 50 lorries worth per day – go in to landfill each year in the UK
Worldwide, a lorry’s worth of clothes is burnt or sent to landfill every second
Less than one per cent of clothing is recycled
It takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton shirt – as much as you’d drink in two-and-a-half years
Compared with 15 years ago, the average person buys 60% more clothing and keeps items for half as long (Greenpeace, 2017)
Cotton farming uses 22.5% of the world’s insecticides and 10% of its pesticides
British women keep, on average, £285 worth of clothes they’ll never wear – that’s £30 billion worth of unused clothing (WRAP 2011)
In the average British wardrobe, 30% of the items haven’t been worn in the last year – that’s 1.7 billion items in the UK!
Clothing consumption produces 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per household per year – as much as 6,000 cars.
If ‘fast fashion’ companies created clothes that lasted just three months longer, they would reduce their carbon, water and waste impact by three per cent.
That’s why, at Royce Lingerie, we take pride in creating products that are high quality and long lasting. We source only the very best fabrics, so you can be sure of excellent design, premium quality and supreme comfort.
We are focused on making the right choices wherever we can, for our customers, our products and the environment. And we’re focussed on continuously improving our processes. Here are some of the environmentally conscious changes we’ve made so far to do our bit:
We’ve introduced a fully digitised, paperless process in our warehouse improving efficiencies across the board
We’ve switched to Green Energy contracts for both gas and electric in the office
We’re launching an Organic Cotton Bra this year, and aim to have a sustainable bra collection by 2025.
