Spring blossom may be giving us all a little lift during lockdown right now, but that’s not the only thing in bloom…thousands of women are also blooming! To those who are pregnant or nursing little ones during lockdown, we’d like to give you a big (socially-distant) high-five for doing an awesome job in extraordinary circumstances.

At Royce we always want to know what our customers really want, so earlier this year we asked pregnant and breastfeeding mums about their experience of buying and wearing maternity bras. The results make interesting reading – it also showed us how we can support you during lockdown maternity life…

A question of appearance

Most women in our survey said they went up a cup size or more, so we asked them how they felt about their bigger boobs. It was a fairly even split with a third feeling good about it, a third feeling bad, and a third indifferent. Of those in the ‘good’ category, over half liked their better shape and cleavage, with around a third enjoying the positive reaction from their partner.

Half of those who didn’t like their larger breasts cited “painful/tender” as the reason, and 42% were frustrated that their clothes no longer fitted. A fifth of women asked said they “felt unattractive” with their bigger boobs, rising to 28% who said they “felt fat” and “found it hard to get used to their body changing so quickly”.

We had plenty more comments relating to appearance with women frustrated at how frumpy or dull maternity bras are. To those women desperate for more attractive and pretty designs – we hear you!

Have you seen our Florence maternity sets? These non-wired super supportive nursing bras come in a bold and sexy floral print with added lace trim – choose from aubergine/cream or teal and buy with matching Brazilian or mini briefs. Or for a sleek and chic look, our best-seller Maisie is now available as a maternity bra in pretty coral.

A question of fitting

Lots of women in our survey talked about the difficulties of finding the perfect fit, particularly when your bra size is in a state of flux. But wearing a well-fitted bra throughout your maternity months is essential to ensure that breast tissue isn’t damaged, and you stay as comfortable as possible. We know that lockdown and social distancing means that getting fitted by an expert in person is impossible, but there is a good alternative…

Almost half of women asked (45%) were unaware of online bra fitting calculators. We have a size calculator on this website alongside a guide to measuring yourself at home. For almost 30 years Royce Lingerie has been an expert in getting the perfect wirefree bra fit, so if you’re still unsure how to adjust your sizing call our fantastic customer service team on 01295 265 557 for fitting advice over the phone. At Royce, we offer free delivery on all orders with promo code FREEDEL, plus free returns (for up to 12 weeks) so you can try on a few different sizes at home. Also have a look at our previous blog on ‘sister sizing’  for the secret to trying out alternative sizes to help you get the best possible fit.

A question of comfort

For those women suffering from tender or painful breasts, let alone sleepless nights and corona-induced anxiety, being comfortable is even more important during these stressful times. Royce’s wirefree bras prove that you don’t have to compromise support for comfort – you can have both. Our best-selling Blossom maternity bra provides excellent support for pregnant/breastfeeding women and is so comfortable you can sleep in it (the perfect lockdown lingerie)! Thanks to its clever design, Blossom can be worn in two ways – as a nursing bra or crop top – and can be adjusted up or down over three cup sizes to fit your changing shape.

Another super comfortable option is our brand new Indie nursing bra. Available in an on-trend petrol blue, the soft moulded cups with lace detailing make Indie a beautiful option for an everyday wirefree nursing bra. The easy to use clips have retainer straps offering more skin-to-skin contact when breastfeeding.
