The most important item in your gym bag

If there’s one thing all women agree on, it’s that an unsupported bust will move a lot during exercise. Big, small, or any size in between, they all do it. The only way to minimise the bounce is to wear a good quality sports bra when you work out.

From yoga and walking to running, playing sports or using the gym, the perfect sports bra will support delicate breast tissue, even during the most rigorous workouts. Not wearing one can lead to breast pain, discomfort or even tissue damage, which could cause stretch marks and sagging. In younger girls, a sports bra can prevent damage to the delicate ligaments that support the breasts, ensuring proper development.

So your sports bra is one item to never leave out of your gym bag – and yet The Telegraph sadly reports that in a survey of more than 2,000 girls aged 11-17, half of them said they avoid sport and exercise because of their breasts, and only 10 per cent always wear a sports bra to exercise.

Wearing one is crucial.

But it’s also so important to find one that fits well – snug around the band, and with cups that fully encase the cups with no ‘overspill’. While racer back styles are brilliant for smaller busts because they anchor the bra closer to the body, larger busts will benefit from traditional shoulder straps to help distribute the weight more evenly. Adjustable, wide straps – or even padded ones – will ensure maximum comfort, and you should be able to fit two fingers underneath.

In a recent opinion feature on sports bras, The Guardian newspaper called them ‘the unsung champions of the gym kit’ – and announced that, for the first time ever, sports bras are part of the official kit for the Women’s World Cup. Although this is a little strange to us here at Royce, given that women have been playing sport for more than 100 years, nobody can deny that sports bras have come a long way. The first sports bras in 1977 consisted of two jock straps sewn together yet, today the sports bra industry is worth $5.5 billion a year – and many women wouldn’t contemplate playing sport without one!

Saddened by the news that many younger girls aren’t taking part in PE because sports bras aren’t on the ‘required uniform’ list and their parents see them as a costly extra, Royce Lingerie had to do something. So to kick off this campaign we spent the evening with local Girls football team Easington United FC, encouraging them to wear a sports bra. We spoke to them about the importance and how to get the right fit. Then we gave them all 50% discount off any order – because we don’t believe that not having one should be a barrier to taking part in sport.
