At Royce it’s no surprise that we believe wirefree bras are the best bras – that’s why we’ve dedicated over 30 years to creating only non-wired bras. But we understand that some people are still on the fence when it comes to ditching the underwire.

If you’re unsure about going wirefree, it’s probably because you’ve heard a few untruths… In this week’s blog post – and in celebration of the launch of our most versatile lounge-style bra yet, the ultra-comfortable Mia – we’re going to bust those myths for the sake of your bust! Here are some wirefree bra facts that may encourage you to never buy an underwired bra again…

Bigger boobs always need an underwired bra

While fuller cups do need additional help to support the delicate breast tissue and relieve potential pain across the back and shoulders, this doesn’t actually come from a bra’s underwire – it comes from the underband. That’s why it’s so important to ensure you’re not only wearing the right cup size, but also the right band size.

Additional support for larger breasts can also come from clever design features such as side slings, the thickness of the straps and underband, and the kind of fabric used. A well-designed bra can give bigger boobs all the support they need without the use of an underwire.

Check out our wirefree fuller-cup range for proof.

An underwired sports bra is a must when exercising

Running, jumping and any other vigorous workouts mean your poor boobs bounce and jiggle all over the place. Secure support is a must, but this doesn’t have to mean an underwired bra. As with fuller cups, a well-designed bra with specific features, such as high necklines and anti-bounce bands, to minimise movement during medium or high-impact activity can be wirefree.

Choosing the right level of support – either low, medium or high-impact – is the most important thing.

Wirefree bra sizes are too general

Some brands may create wirefree bras in small, medium and large, but not us! At Royce, fit is everything, that’s why all of our wirefree bras come in a wide range of cup and band sizes to ensure you find the best fit for your body.

Wirefree bras create a ‘monoboob’ effect

If your wirefree bra isn’t creating a smooth, defined shape under your clothing we’re guessing that you’re wearing a bra that’s far too ‘relaxed’ in its design. Some wirefree bras are little more than a crop top, a strappy covering for the breasts that lets everything hang and sag completely unsupported.

As always, smart design will ensure a wirefree bra doesn’t create a ‘monoboob’ effect. Wirefree bras can be designed with different cup styles, such as moulded cups to give a smooth shape under tight-fitting tops or plunging cups to wear under low necklines.

You can still wear a crop top-style bra that supports and shapes in all the right places, just look at our Lola style. And lounge bras, like the new Mia, can still be super relaxed while creating a defined shape under clothing.

Wirefree can make your boobs saggy

There is no medical evidence to suggest that any bra will stop breasts from sagging over time. The gradual loosening of the ligaments that keep breasts ‘up’ is inevitable and is related to hormonal changes such as the decline in oestrogen during menopause.

You can slow this process down by wearing any kind of bra that gives you good support. As before, a well-designed bra can do this without a wire.

Wirefree is extra comfortable

This one is no myth – it’s definitely true! No digging in, no marks on your skin, no danger from broken wires…and it can be super supportive and look great. What’s not to love?

Whatever style of bra you choose, nothing works if it doesn’t fit you properly. This is your regular reminder to get yourself measured, preferably by a professional bra fitter (our stockists are experts so a great option for this) every six months or whenever you experience a significant life change such as surgery or pregnancy.

If you can’t visit a fitter in person, follow our expert guide to a DIY bra fitting at home
