Frequently asked questions
1. What do Royce sell?
As the world’s only dedicated wirefree bra specialist, we only design and sell wirefree bras. Our range includes bras for everyday wear, sports bras, maternity and nursing bras, teen or ‘first’ bras, larger-cup bras, and post-surgery bras.
2. Why buy a wirefree bra?
We’re dedicated to designing wirefree lingerie because we believe wirefree is wonderful! Going wirefree is usually recommended for sports, post-surgery or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. However, we believe wirefree gives you superb comfort every day. And if you think your cup size means an underwire is essential, think again! A perfectly engineered bra can provide all the comfort and support you need, without a wire.
3. Where is the best place to be fitted properly?
We always recommend that you visit your local Royce stockist to be fitted. We have stockists across the UK – find someone in your area via our ‘Find a Stockist’ page.
However, if you’re unable to visit a fitter in person, you can call our fantastic team of experts who can offer a remote fitting over the phone – call 01295 265557 or email [email protected] (Mon-Fri, 9am – 4pm). You will also find plenty of advice on how to find your perfect fit via our online ‘Fit Guide’.
4. How does the sizing work for briefs/shorts?
Our matching briefs and shorts are labelled as small, medium, large and extra-large. This roughly translates as S = UK 8-10; M = UK 12-14; L = UK 16-18; XL = UK 20-22.
5. Where can I buy Royce bras?
You can buy online direct from us. Alternatively, support your local independent retailers and visit one of our stockists – visit our ‘Find a Stockist’ page to find Royce bras in your area.
6. Will my bra size be the same in a wirefree bra as an under-wired bra?
If you’re used to wearing an underwired bra the fit of a wirefree bra may feel slightly different. 80% of the support comes from the underband so they can feel tighter. Also, similar to clothing, your size may vary depending on the brand you usually wear. For fitting advice call our customer service team on 01295 265557 or email [email protected] (Mon-Fri, 9am – 4pm).
7. Where are your bras manufactured?
We are always keeping an eye on production opportunities closer to home in order to reduce our carbon footprint. However, currently our bras are manufactured in China, Indonesia and India. We have good, long-standing relationships with our factories. Our design team schedules visits to each factory on a yearly basis in order to build and maintain relationships and spend time on the factory floor. The factories that we work with currently are accredited with a combination of SMETA and Better Work certifications.
8. Do you have a size conversion chart?
Yes, click here to go to our size conversion chart page.
1. I’m pregnant…when should I buy my first maternity bra?
As soon as your normal bras start to feel tight or uncomfortable! It’s a good idea to get fitted for your first wirefree maternity bra about 6-8 weeks into your pregnancy, and again every 6-8 weeks following. It’s a good idea to fit your first pregnancy bra on the tightest eye to allow for the growth of your breasts and your bump! To find your perfect bra for pregnancy, please take a look at our range of ‘Comfort’ bras.
2. How will my bra size/breasts change & when?
You may start to notice changes in your breasts almost straightaway (sore, tingling, tender breasts can be one of the earliest symptoms of pregnancy). Your changing body shape will mean your bra size can change a number of times during your pregnancy. Hormonal changes may also mean your breasts become more sensitive. Breasts may also feel ‘lumpy’ in pregnancy as the milk duct system develops.
3. Why is a good support bra so important in pregnancy?
Because of the rapid changes happening to your body, it’s really important to get a great fitting, supportive maternity bra for this time of your life. Ill-fitting bras and bras with wires can damage the delicate breast tissue. The breasts contain no muscles so it is very important to make sure you are well supported to help to maintain good shape after birth.
4. When should I buy my first Bra for Nursing?
It may be best to leave buying your nursing bra until 2-4 weeks before you baby is due, to ensure an accurate fit. Don’t forget to leave enough room for breastpads, and to allow for a small increase in breast size when your milk “comes in”. Lengthening the strap slightly will also give a little more room in the cup for those very full moments before a feed. Of course you can always wear your breastfeeding bra as a support bra during the last few weeks of your pregnancy, bearing in mind that your rib-cage will shrink after birth.
1. I’m going in for breast surgery what should I take to the hospital?
If you are about to have breast or chest surgery, it’s crucial to find the right bra to take into hospital and wear in the weeks immediately after your operation. It really is worth taking the time to have an expert fitting before you go into hospital. Three bras in the Royce range are suitable for wearing straight after surgery – the Comfi-Bra, Eden and the Silver Post Surgery Bra. As well as being wirefree, they also have light compression to help reduce swelling and promote healing and front fasteners for ease of access and dressing.
2. I have had breast surgery – what type of bra do I need to buy?
After breast surgery, a non wired bra will be more comfortable than an underwired bra, which may irritate or dig into the delicate scar tissue.
If you have had a mastectomy, and wish to wear a prosthesis, our Post Surgery range of pocketed bras will be ideal for your needs. Each of our post surgery bras has bilateral pockets to hold your prosthesis, helping you to feel secure and comfortable.
Also available is our range of Comfort bras, perfect for ladies who don’t need a pocketed bra. So whether you have had a breast augmentation, reduction or lumpectomy, you should be able to find the ideal post surgery bra for your needs.
3. Why is the Silver Post Surgery bra recommended after surgery?
The Silver Post Surgery Bra is specifically designed to help care for your surgery site. It contains real silver fibre, which has anti-bacterial properties and can aid the recovery of scar tissue. The underband of this bra is designed to fit well below the root of the breast so that it does not irritate surgery scars, which is particularly helpful if you’ve had breast implants. Other clever design features include front fastening for easy dressing and access to surgery areas, Velcro straps with touch and close fastening for simple adjustment and perfect comfort, and double layer cups for added support.
4. When should I get fitted for a prothesis?
Once your healing process is well underway, it’s time to get a new bra to regain your natural silhouette and be the perfect fit under your clothes. If you’ve been fitted with a prosthesis, a Royce post-surgery pocketed bra will be the perfect solution to regaining confidence after surgery and getting back to buying beautiful bras that make you look great and feel supported.
You should fit a Royce pocketed bra to your natural breast. The bra should be comfortable and support the natural breast while still holding the prosthesis securely within the bra pocket. The perfect fit will result in a good balanced silhouette under your clothes. It is advised you take a t-shirt to try on over the bra at a fitting, you should feel confident with the smooth shape the bra gives you. Choosing a wirefree bra will provide you with firm support but will allow for a comfortable, breathable stretch to not irritate scarring or restrict blood-flow to your surgery site.
5. Can you add a pocket to my bra?
A pocketing service is available for most Royce Comfort bras to hold a prothesis, at an additional charge of £5 per pocket. Pockets that are added after manufacturer are flat, i.e. is not made in the shape of the cup, but sits flat against the chest wall.
We are unable to pocket our Impact Free Sports bra, with the exception of the Flex Fit which is pocketed as standard, or any bras from other brands.
If you require a pocket you may also like to view our Post-Surgery range. The bras in this range come pocketed as standard.
6. What pocketed bras do you have available for fuller cups?
Maisie is available up to a G cup and comes with pockets as standard. Beautifully comfortable and stylish too, Maisie is a great smooth-cup bra in soft fabric with satin cuff detailing and bow.
For ladies over a G cup pockets can be added to either Luna which is available up to a K cup or Charlotte which is available up to a L cup.
7. What bra should I wear once my scars have healed?
After your six or eight week check-up, you will be free to choose from a much wider range of styles. We would still recommend wirefree bras, however, as these will gently expand with you throughout the day, ensuring no restriction of blood-flow to your surgery site and keeping you cool and comfortable. There are so many styles to tempt you that shopping for your new shape can be a real treat!

1. Why do teens need to wear a bra?
All boobs need the right support, whether you’re big or small, to ensure the breast tissue isn’t damaged. You protect your posture and stay comfortable. Bras are important both for the psychological milestone they represent and for the comfort and support they provide while a girl’s body grows and develops through puberty.
2. What sort of bra should my teen wear?
Many lingerie manufacturers offer bras for teenage girls, and most recognise the importance of ensuring that they are non-wired. There’s plenty of time for lacy, push-up bras once girls are older – for now, they need a softly supportive bra that will expand gently with their body as it grows, without any wires digging in or restricting the growth of the breast tissue.
3. How do you know if the bra fits correctly?
Once they’ve found a bra they like or if you want to make sure their current bra is still fitting correctly, simple follow the simple 5 step guide:
1. Hook & Eye – We recommend you fasten your bra on the middle hook and eye so you can adjust to make it bigger or smaller if you feel uncomfortable. Most of the bra’s support comes from the underband, so it should be snug, but not so tight that it marks your skin.
2. Underband – Once you’ve done the back of the bra up, take a look in the mirror to check it. The underband should sit in a straight line across your back. If it’s riding up, it’s too loose.
3. The cups – Next, check the front. The cups should sit nicely on top of your boobs with the fabric smooth against your skin. There should be no bulging or gaping.
4. The straps – Test your straps by making sure you can comfortably slip two fingers underneath and loosen or tighten until they feel perfect (you can take your bra off to do this if it’s too fiddly). Straps slipping down can be annoying and straps digging in are uncomfortable, so take a few minutes to get it right.
5. Jiggle – Now stand back, jiggle about a bit, find how it feels – adjust again if needed. Looking and feeling good? Well done, you’ve just found your perfect fit!
4. What age should girls be measured for their first bra?
Girls should be measured for a bra roughly between the ages of 8 and 12 years (obviously, depending on their own individual development).
Many Royce stockists have attended our fitting courses and are specifically trained to fit Royce wirefree bras. They are also experienced in helping customers feel completely at ease with the fitting process and confident that they’ve chosen the right style.
5. What is a good sports bra for pre-teen and teenage girls?
Many girls (and their parents) believe a simple crop top is sufficient, particularly if breasts are small. However, crop tops often don’t offer enough support, even for smaller breast sizes, and certainly not enough for medium or high-impact activity. A non-wired sports bra is best for growing and developing breast tissue and at Royce we’ve designed a range of wirefree sports bras for small to larger breast sizes.
Our favourites include:
Impact Free Adjustable Fit
This stylish sports bra features an adjustable racer-back allowing the bra to be anchored to the body, offering greater support. Available in band sizes 30 to 38, and cup sizes A to D.
6. What advice can I give to my teen before a fitting, if they’re feeling nervous?
Your daughter might be a bit daunted by the idea of a bra fitting, and that’s quite understandable. Help to demystify it by explaining what to expect. Let her know that she won’t have to completely undress in front of anyone and that she can keep a t-shirt or crop top on if she feels more comfortable doing so when measured. It’s important to make her feel at ease and for her first bra fitting experience to be a good one. This will give her a great start and help ensure that she always wears the right size bra later in life too.
1. Which sustainable actions have you taken in your office/warehouse?
In 2017 we completely overhauled our warehouse process, moving to a fully digitised paperless warehouse system which, ultimately, reduces the carbon footprint of each bra. We switched energy providers to Green Energy (gas) and Ecotricity (electric) in 2017. Paper recycling is already widespread in the Royce office, and food caddies are being introduced in the kitchens to encourage food waste recycling. Fabric offcuts (from the design process) are donated for reuse in a local nursery for arts and crafts projects.
This year, we’re continuing to encourage sustainable choices within every aspect of office life – from the choice of toilet roll, to the use of menstrual cups for our workforce (90% of whom are women).
2. How is the ‘Eden’ bra sustainable?
‘Eden’ is made from 85% organic cotton. Regular cotton is grown using surprisingly vast amounts of water, fertiliser and pesticides. Organic cotton is produced without the use of toxic chemicals, and with lower fuel and energy consumption. This chemical-free production process also prevents water contamination and creates safer working conditions for cotton farmers.
If you suffer from any skin allergies or sensitivities, you may find swapping to organic cotton to be particularly beneficial. Many people believe organic cotton feels better on their skin.
3. Are you planning to make any of your current products in organic cotton?
Yes, we aim to have at least 20% of our full range made from organic or recycled fabrics by 2025. Using recycled materials helps to transition into a more circular fashion economy, creating a business that is restorative and regenerative by design.
4. Is your packaging sustainable?
We have now switched from plastic postal bags to recycled cardboard boxes and paper bags, when sending orders. You may also have noticed that our new swing tags are made from an eco-friendly material using organic cotton.
5. Why are you still sending me your bras in plastic poly bags?
Unfortunately, we are yet to find a solution for the plastic poly bags our bras are supplied in.
Poly bags protect the bras when they are shipped from the factory to our warehouse, stored in our warehouse, and then shipped on to our customers. It’s important that the bras are protected as damaged bras simply create more waste.
We have looked into alternatives for the plastic poly bags but the ones we have tested so far are not durable enough. We are not alone in the poly bag issue: many brands use poly bags for the same reason as we do and the majority are looking into alternatives. We hope we can all find a solution soon – be assured that we will make that change as soon as we can!
6. Do I need to handwash Royce bras?
“I haven’t got time to handwash!” we hear you say. Don’t panic. Every Royce bra can be safely machine-washed on a 30-degree, delicate cycle. Not only is a 30-degree wash gentle on the fabric, but it’s more sustainable, too. According to Ariel, washing your laundry at 30 degrees or lower uses up to 57% less energy per cycle. It’s win-win!
7. Where are your bras made?
We are always keeping an eye on production opportunities closer to home in order to reduce our carbon footprint. However, currently our bras are manufactured in China, Indonesia and Bangladesh We have good, long-standing relationships with our factories. With the exception of this year (for obvious reasons), our design team schedules visits to each factory on a yearly basis in order to build and maintain relationships and spend time on the factory floor. The factories that we work with currently are accredited with a combination of SMETA and Better Work certifications.
8. Can I recycle my bras with you?
Yes. In 2012 Royce Lingerie teamed up with Against Breast Cancer to offer its customers the chance to recycle old bras; helping the environment and raising money for charity at the same time. Simply send your bras to Royce Head Office. Royce House, Canada Close, Banbury, OXON, OX16 2RT
