Doing your bit for the environment

We’re all becoming more conscious about our impact on the environment. Many of us are recycling, using keep-cups, avoiding straws, and carefully researching our purchases big and small. But when it comes to lingerie – how can you make a difference?

As lingerie experts we’ve got a few ideas that you can easily implement. If we all chose to make these changes, together we could make a big difference.

Recycle your old bras

We have been working with Against Breast Cancer (ABC) and BCR Global Textiles since 2012, on an initiative that gives customers the chance to recycle their own old bras at Bra Banks across the UK. Not only does it help the environment, but it’s also a way of fundraising.

The initiative was created in collaboration with ABC, which funds ground-breaking cancer research, and BCR, which specialises in recycling textiles to give them a new lease of life in Africa.

When you take your unwanted underwear to a Bra Bank, it’s whisked off to Africa where traders support their families selling textiles locally, keeping people out of poverty.

For every tonne of textiles collected (that’s only 9,000 bras), BCR donates £1,000 to Against Breast Cancer. With 30 million women in the UK, this scheme could make all the difference to people in need!

There are Bra Banks all over the UK – from the Shetland Islands to the Isle of Wight, including at many of our stockists. Find your nearest at www.againstbreastcancer.org.uk.

Get the fit right, first time

We’re passionate about getting the right fit. Head to our fitting guide for tips on how your bra should fit, or visit your local stockist for a fitting.
Making sure your bras fit will mean fewer unused bras sitting at the back of your underwear drawer.

FITTING GUIDE

Use bra wash bags

Of course we have to wash our bras – but washing them can cause wear and tear, and can snag other garments if the hooks get caught. By using a Bra Wash Bag, you’ll not only protect your bra and extend its life, but you’ll also ensure your other items don’t get damaged. It’s win-win!

Take care when washing

There are a few steps you can take to wash and care for your bras in the best way, to prolong their wear. These include:

  • 1. Fastening the hooks before putting them in the machine
  • 2. Washing on a delicate cycle with gentle detergent
  • 3. Washing with similar colours, in a Bra Wash Bag
  • 4. Reshaping the cups of moulded bras with your hands when they come out the wash (never wring or stretch them)
  • 5. Hanging them out to dry (don’t put them in the tumble dryer as this can break down some of the fibres and you’ll lose elasticity).

Store your bras properly

The way you store your bras can have a big impact on their lifespan. Try not to chuck them all into one draw in a tangled mess! Separate your moulded cup bras from the rest of your collection, as they can pucker and bend if they become inverted or folded. Instead, buy a draw with dividers so you can keep them organised and safe from damage.
